Bageshwar is situated at the confluence of the rivers Gomati and Sarayu. A big town, with a population of
more than a lakh, Bageshwar is a trading place.
HISTORY: Legend says that Sarayu and Gomati, loved Lord Shiva. But Lord Shiva had
more affection for Sarayu. So he announced a contest between them, as to who searches him first, gets him. He was hiding at the place of
Bageshwar. Gomati reached there and was about to find him. But Shiva, on seeing Gomati, immediately assumed the form of a Bagh (Leopard).
So Gomati kept searching for him, and in the while Sarayu reached there and Shiva reverted to his normal form. Hence he is worshiped here
as Bageshwar (Leopard God). And even today, river Gomati flows zigzag searching for Shiva, while Sarayu flows straight.
