Shey: The Village of Shey is a few km outskirts of Leh. The Shey Monastery, again, is located on a
small hillock, overlooking the Indus, and the greens around it. You are required to park your vehicle somewhere down on the road, and
then climb on the hillock. And one thing you are sure to be accompanied by, is breathlessness. On reaching the top, a door leads to
stairs, climbing which, one can turn to left and see the huge Chorten. There are 5 big chortens, which can be seen from the road below
and give a very good click. This place provides a fantastic overview of Leh and a photo is a must. You can then move forward to the
prayer hall, where a donation will get you inside. It will be quite dark inside, and photography may not be possible, neither is it
allowed. There is a tall 42 feet statue of Buddha, similar to the one at Thikse. And the remaining is the same like the other
monasteries. Shey was the erstwhile capital of Ladakh. The murals here in the monastery, were painstakingly restored somewhere in the
80's.
Stakna: The gompa of Stakna is located on a small hillock on the outskirts of Leh. Compared to other monasteries which
are located very near mountains, this one is away from mountains and hence a 360 degree view is in the offering.
Spituk:
The monastery of Spituk is located on a hillock just outskirts of Leh.
