After the enthralling experience of the plains, the excitement is on the high, as you ascend for
Tanglang La, which is the icing over the cake. Tanglang La is the second highest motorable road on earth, reaching a height of
5360 metres above sea level. While climbing for it, you can get a good glimpse of the plains you just came from.
On
reaching the top, the view is just great. You feel on the top of the world at such a height and almost all mountains, as far
as the eyes can see, appear below your level, except the just adjacent mountain which is still higher and it's peak snow clad.
All the clouds below are now below you and that too gives a good click. But one precaution please. Just coming out of your
vehicle for a photo is also going to make you breathless. People have fainted here. So be careful. There is a temple nearby which
one can see. On the plaque is inscribed "Taglang La. Altitude : xxxxx feet. You are standing on the second highest road in the
world. Unbelievable, is not it?" The adjoining photos have been taken in the dark, and hence the scans have not come out well.
Please bear with me.
After descending from Tanglang La, 29km from Tanglang La, comes Rumtse, which is the first inhabitation
on the Ladakh side of MLH. The last village on the Himachal side was Dharcha, 5 km from Jispa. So from Dharcha to Rumtse, i.e. for
a stretch of almost 254 km, there is no sign of any habitation and the area is completely deserted, except of course, for the brave
and dedicated Indian Army Personnel, who have setup camps along the route at some places. But they are temporary. No one can stay here
in winter. It's humanly impossible because of the most hostile climate.
